Organic Agriculture in Tunisia

Organic agriculture is relatively new in Tunisia. It started in the middle of the eighties (80’s) by private initiatives and progressed slowly until 1997. The last years were characterized by a high increase in area and number of farmers, a crop diversification and the organization of the organic sector. This important development was the result of policies supporting this sector and underlined in a national strategy based on the following aspects.

Tunisia is considered the sole country which completely applies a national regulation in African countries.

The following figure shows the evolution of organic area (crop, pasture, wild collection) and number of farmers during the period 1999-2017.

The following table shows the distribution of exports of organic products in value and volume by product for the year 2018. While, these exports including 60 products to 36 countries.
